What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

As a therapist, I provide both counselling and psychotherapeutic services. The two are not mutually exclusive, and a client's individual circumstances and goals guide the framework for our work together.  The subtle and fluid interplay of both therapeutic types usually develops organically, in alignment with a client's hopes, wants and needs.

Counselling is characterised as a short-term process focusing on the specific issues presently affecting a client - with a view towards understanding and resolution.

The counselling process enables clients to:-

  • identify what's 'not working' for them

  • gain clarity around the change they'd like to make

  • develop a plan focused on values and goals

  • work towards their 'preferred future' in a supportive framework

Psychotherapy enables a client to examine the psychology of their early life in greater detail. It explores how historical experiences may be influencing their present thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and potentially impacting the quality of their current life experience. It seeks to reveal and understand the deeper root causes of the challenges clients are facing.

Ultimately, psychotherapy aims to empower an individual to 'free' themselves from the negative influence of unconscious thoughts and 'triggers' - which can overwhelm their emotions, and undermine their efforts to make conscious and positive change in their life.
